Camino del Norte: Bilbao → Santander
A comfort-focused week on the northern coast of Spain — real Camino stages, better recovery, and a certified guide, walked as a small group.

Walk one of the most beautiful sections of the Camino del Norte, following the northern coast of Spain from Bilbao to Santander — Basque and Cantabrian landscapes, seaside towns, beaches, cliffs, green valleys, fishing villages, and historic Camino places.
This is not a full Camino to Santiago de Compostela — it's a carefully selected coastal section of the Northern Way, walked without the dormitory-style, ultra-budget format. Mostly twin rooms in hotels, guesthouses, or small local accommodations, with breakfast included where available.
A real-cost, comfort-focused trekking tour for people who value good recovery, small-group rhythm, and professional route support.

Eight days, six walking stages
From arrival in Bilbao to departure from Santander. Tap a day to open it.
DAY 1Arrival in Bilbao30 AugustOptional city walk only
Arrival in Bilbao and check-in for the first night. Bilbao is the starting point of our Camino del Norte section: a dynamic Basque city where modern architecture, old streets, river views, and Camino history meet. This first day is for arrival, settling in, meeting the group, and preparing for the walking days ahead.
DAY 2Bilbao → Portugalete31 August~19.7 km · Moderate · ~4h45
Our first walking stage leaves Bilbao and follows the Camino towards Portugalete. The official route crosses urban areas, climbs towards Kobetas and Santa Águeda, and then continues through Barakaldo and Sestao before reaching Portugalete. Portugalete sits near the mouth of the Nervión estuary and is known for the Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO-listed transporter bridge opened in 1893.
DAY 3Portugalete → Pobeña1 September~12.3 km · Moderate · ~3h10
A shorter stage after the first long day. We leave the urban environment behind and walk towards the coast. This day follows a more gentle route towards La Arena beach and then into Pobeña, a small coastal village near Muskiz — giving the body space to adapt before the longer stages ahead.
DAY 4Pobeña → Castro-Urdiales2 September~23.5 km · Moderate · ~5h50
We say goodbye to the Basque Country and enter Cantabria on foot. The day begins with the old mining railway route above the sea, now part of the Camino, offering cliffs and coastal views. The official route later climbs towards La Helguera before descending through inland valleys towards Castro-Urdiales, a historic fishing town with a harbour, Gothic church, castle, lighthouse and medieval bridge.
DAY 5Castro-Urdiales → Laredo3 September~30.6 km · Moderate · ~6h30
One of the longest days of the tour. The Camino leaves Castro-Urdiales and continues through coastal villages, inland valleys, rural tracks and small settlements before reaching Laredo. There is an ascent after La Magdalena, gaining around 200 m over 2.5 km, but the main challenge of the day is the distance rather than technical difficulty.
DAY 6Laredo → Güemes4 September~29.5 km · Moderate · ~7h15
Another long and beautiful day. From Laredo, the route follows the long beach area towards El Puntal and crosses by boat to Santoña when the service is operating, then continues through beaches, coastal paths, villages and rural Cantabrian landscapes towards Güemes. The day includes the climb over El Brusco, a short but noticeable ascent after the beach section.
DAY 7Güemes → Santander5 September~20.5 km total (~15.5 km walking + boat) · Easy–moderate
The final walking stage brings us towards Santander. From Güemes, we walk through gentle countryside towards Galizano and then continue towards the coast. With good conditions, we may follow the coastal variant through Langre and Loredo. The stage reaches Somo, where the traditional boat crossing brings pilgrims across the bay to Santander — marking the end of our walking route.
DAY 8Santander → Bilbao · Departure6 SeptemberNo planned trekking stage
After breakfast, we return from Santander to Bilbao by public transport. Participants can plan flights or onward travel from Bilbao. This is a travel and departure day, with time to close the route, say goodbye to the group, and return with a completed coastal section of the Camino del Norte.
